Who knew that a car made in the 80s could inspire a division still making waves today?
The very first BMW M3 set the standard for others to follow. One of the most iconic sports cars of all time, and the one that revolutionised the midsize segment when it was introduced in 1986.
TOURING CAR RACING WAS THE MAIN OVERRIDING DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE FOR THE FIRST-GENERATION BMW M3.

Rather than developing a more volume-produced model range's sporting flagship, BMW developed the M3 as a road-going racing car. The selected category of racing was Group A Production Touring Cars of the German Touring Car Championship (DTM).
In order for a race car to be homologated, it had to have at least 5,000 road-legal units sold within 12 months.

It was a tremendous opportunity for the development team to work on both the production and race versions of the car simultaneously, and they took full advantage of it.
