Van Gogh's Sunflowers, the most iconic bouquet of the art world, have a history as vibrant as the pigments themselves. Imagine Arles, France, late 1888,  early 1989 – Van Gogh, not merely painting sunflowers but practically living among them in his studio. It was a floral residency, an artistic commune where each stroke echoed the presence of eternal sunshineand a hint of pollen in the air.

Vincent painted a total of five large canvases with sunflowers in a vase, with three shades of yellow “and nothing else”. It was the artist’s way of demonstrating that it was possible to create an impactful image with numerous variations of a single colour – with mesmerising results.

Apart from their universal recognition, these paintings had a special significance for Van Gogh: they communicated “gratitude”, in his words. He hung the first two in his friend Paul Gauguin’s room, who lived with him for a while during this period in the “Yellow House”. Gauguin was impressed by the sunflowers, which he thought were “completely Vincent”.

Recent investigations added a layer of complexity to Van Gogh's brushwork. Beyond artistic prowess, there's a suggestion of a hidden Fibonacci sequence in the arrangement of petals. The golden ratio in sunflower geometry hints at a meticulous fusion of art and mathematics, showcasing Van Gogh as more than just an artist.

In their radiant complexity,
”Sunflowers” transcend the canvas as
a testament to the artist's emotional journey.
The hidden mathematics and the Gauguin related
gossip just seem to add layers of intrigue to the
series - inviting art enthusiasts to delve beyond
the surface and get lost in these Van Gogh’s
timeless masterpieces.
