Rousseau painted innocent-looking pictures that could easily resemble children's book illustrations. In 1906's Merry Jesters, the artist depicts a lush jungle scene oozing with humour in its bizarre details. Although rejected by many of his peers, his work influenced some of the most regarded 20th-century artists.
