Being a synesthete, a condition in which the senses are directly linked, Kandinsky relied heavily on every inner perception to complete his paintings. Rather than being a merely visual endeavor or expression, his paintings were more of a metaphysical improvisation, where notes led to colors and shapes portrayed feelings and emotions.
This “Network of above” in particular, was painted in 1927, during his return to Germany and while he led classes at the Bauhaus, where he developed his approach in regards to color theory and the correlation of shapes and forms with psychology. His abstract work, during this period, was a reflection on the effects and the relation between strong, straight lines and the contrasting shapes of curved and angled figures.
