Klimt’s protegé, Egon Schiele was a major figurative painter noted for his intensity and raw sexuality in the many self-portraits produced embodying Vienna’s spirit of the time.
Unlike the rest of his pieces of naked twisted bodies, in this painting, Schiele portraits himself with a rare self-assurance for a young artist, with a touch of vanity on his elegant pose and hands. He is also framed in a Catholic manner normally associated with Christ, wearing a fashionable shirt and vest (that he didn’t possess) slipping in the role of the elegant man that brings salvation through his art.
